Fables From Far Away Lands - Part II
You know, sometimes you can forget how rewarding it can be to perform for children. I hope I don't ever forget after the feeling we got today from the amazing first audience from Brookes Road Public School in Scarborough! What a day!
The cast and crew of 3DOM Theatre have been rehearsing for two weeks, and we got it together just in time; the magic of the theatre brought the show to life! We set up in the gym with the full set for the first time and finished our set up just in time for the kids to arrive. Everyone backstage was so nervous! For Greg (our director and writer) this was his show that he had been working on for four years, and for us, well, we just didn't want to screw it up for him! There were a few things we had never really done before, like the Tortoise and the Hare race because we needed an audience for that, so that was nerve racking. Soon enough, the show was underway, and to our great appreciation, the kids were REALLY into it! From the second the Val walked out onto the stage and began speaking, the kids were laughing and talking to her! It was fantastic! We performed for around 200-300 kids all from kindergarden to grade 6. I was a bit nervous about the older grades, hoping they wouldn't make much of a hassle thinking they were too cool for the show, but even they were singing along! We have a part of the show where everytime the evil pirate comes out, the kids have to boo him off, and that must have been their favourite part, because they got so loud I couldn't even hear myself singing through the monitors! It was so great to hear them be that excited, and as much as it was an excuse for them to be out of class, I really think they learned a few things from the show, and maybe got excited about theatre! The audience participation parts of the show went really well, much better than I thought they would have. I guess to sum up; I was really proud of the cast and crew, we put on a really good show, and the school was very impressed. I hope we get the opportunity to do it again at another school. In fact, if you know of any schools who might like something like this, tell them to check out his website here: www.3domtheatre.com Thanks for reading, keep checking back for more updates! - Dan Fables From Far Away Lands
I have to say a special thank you to Greg Carruthers for giving me my next job and project to work on! My dear friend and fellow SLC graduate has officially started his very own children's theatre company called 3DOM Theatre doing a show that Greg wrote himself called "Fables From Far Away Lands"!
![]() It's pronounced "freedom theatre", the way young kids say the word "three". Get it? No? Here's some dialogue to explain:
Mother: Hey there, little Jimmy! Would you like a healthy snack of a double cheese burger? (The world we live in) Little Jimmy: I want free! If you still don't get it, I'm sorry for wasting your time. Needless to say, I am very excited! The last children's show I did was Thumbelina with Solar Stage, and there really is no feeling like seeing the light in a child's eye as they are introduced to a whole new medium called theatre. This show will be touring around to different schools, so it will be a whole new challenge of performing the same show in different places! Awesome! I'm really proud of Greg, this really is a phenominal accomplishment. If you don't know who Greg Carruthers is, it's this guy: ![]() Remember the name, this company is going places! Greg was a very fun person to be on stage with, and though this time we won't be on stage together, I think we're still going to have a lot of fun!
What's more is I get to be onstage with my lovely girlfriend, Val Woodrow, and with my dear friend Jessika Korback-Lum, AND (that's right there's more!) the music for the show is written by another friend of mine Lindsay van der Grinten! Rehearsals will be beginning really soon, I can't wait to begin! Until next time! - Dan Headshots and Christmas
So, last Sunday I had my new headshots done. You can check them out here and see pieces of them as the banners for my website now!
I had them done by Diem Franke in Toronto, and I have to say, I had a lot of fun doing them! It was kind of my first shoot, other than the brief one I did with Valberg Imaging for my old headshot, and unprofessional ones with friends. It was really cool to see all the big equipment she had! She was quite pleasant to work with, and made me feel very comfortable, which is good because I am no model! She was very quick to send them to me and Jennifer (my agent) and even quicker to give my the retouched photos that we chose. The only problem now is having to buy the prints, which I sadly won't be able to do until the new year, but that's the nature of the beast. I would definately highly recommend Diem Franke! You can find out more about her here. I am very excited now that these headshots are done! Now Jennifer and I can really start working to get some work lined up! As for right now, I am back in Belleville, Ontario with my family for Christmas. It is definately different than Toronto, but it is a nice breath of fresh air (literally!). New years resolutions? Get some more work for me and MMG!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! - Dan "You Are Perfectly Fine"
So, this past Saturday, I began and finished filming my very first film I've ever been in! It was very exciting!
The film is a student film by director Damien Min about a man (me) named Brendan who partied a little to hard last night, and wakes up not remembering a whole lot. As he gets up out of bed, hung over, he realises that a strange woman named Ashley is in his apartment. She begins to try seducing Brendan, and tells him how amazing he was last night, and how his girlfriend Leanna won't be too happy about this. Brendan then checks his phone to see many missed calls from Leanna, and a voicemail saying that the relationship is over because of last night. Brendan still has no idea what in fact happened last night, and tries to go into his room alone to try and figure things out, but Ashley won't have it. Eventually we learn that last night Brendan was being Ashley, that in fact this girl in his apartment isn't a girl, but a part of Brendan that he has been surpressing. The film finishes with Ashley and Brendan becoming one, and Brendan accepting who he really is, a woman trapped in a man's body. My call time was 8:30 in the morning, but I got there at around 8:10. I met everyone and then got myself into costume, and the makeup girls did their magic. We didn't start shooting until about 9-9:30am, and we didn't finish until 12:00am. Sixteen hours on set! I now understand why movies take about a year to make! It was a long day, but I learned so much! I learned all about the little subtle things that I never thought about like the lights, and the camera getting caught in any reflections, and flags/screens and silks that alter the tone of the lighting. At one point we were filming at around 10 o'clock at night and the lighting was making the room look like early morning! It was fascinating! I met a lot of really talented and hard working people that day, and I am glad to have that project on my resume! Damien, the director told me he will be giving me a copy of the film, so I can start my film reel soon! I'm excited to see the final product! -Dan MY FIRST BLOG
Hello everyone and welcome to my official website!
My name is Dan Thompson and I thought it was about time I started marketing myself through the internet as an actor. I'm very excited about this website, so I hope you enjoy looking around. I'm still in the process of collecting pictures for my photos page, so keep checking back! As of two days ago, I signed on with a new agency called MMG located on King Street West. I am very excited to start working with them! They focus on film and television which is really great, because that is an area that I am very interested in persuing! So who knows, maybe you'll be seeing me in a commercial or something coming up soon! Also stay tuned to this website, because as much as I'm an actor/singer, I'm also a musician/songwriter and I will be adding a new page that is dedicated to the music that I write and record! Thank you all again for coming to this page and checking it out! - Dan |
